- promote an understanding of safe practice, and develop a sense of responsibility towards their own and others’ safety and well being
The intent for PE and Sport at Moss Hall is to enable all pupils leaving our primary school to be physically literate, with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and a lifelong love and participation in physical activity and sport. Our expectations are that we would see the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity and that PE and sport are used across the school as a tool for wider whole school improvement, including cross-curricular skills such as problem-solving and confidence in the ability to analyse performance critically. We use Get Set 4 PE to support us in delivering a broad and balanced PE curriculum.
Pupils will leave Moss Hall with increased confidence, knowledge and skills in PE and sport, having had a broad experience of a wide range of sports and physical activities, both as part of the curriculum and through extra-curricular activities. We believe this will lead to increased participation in competitive sport and enable all pupils to develop a good understanding of the rules and tactics of a variety of sports and to develop wider skills such as teamwork, resilience, the importance of reflection and to embed the values of fairness and respect.
Swimming
At Moss Hall we develop swimmers in three strokes (front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke), building their confidence, strength and stamina. Our swimmers widen their knowledge and develop their technical vocabulary to enable them to complete stroke analysis and correction. They demonstrate an understanding of how to create propulsion through the water, gliding to swim more efficiently and an understanding of their body position to impact their speed, stamina and distance. Our children will practise water safety and lifesaving skills to enable them to keep themselves and others safe in and around water.
Sequencing/progression
At Moss Hall we…
- ensure the sequence of lessons builds upon children’s fundamental skills and provide opportunities for application within competitive situations
- develop skilful use of the body, the ability to remember, repeat and refine actions; and to perform them with increasing control, coordination and fluency
- ensure that the individual lesson progression allows opportunities for a physical warm-up and recap of previous learning; skill acquisition and discussion of the lesson focus; skill development and application through competition; and a lesson recap which allows time for reflection
- give children the opportunity to apply and develop a broad range of skills where each lesson builds upon their previous learning
- develop an increasing ability to select, link and apply tactics and compositional ideas
- give children the opportunity to communicate and collaborate, allowing them to explore their understanding of how to develop further and to recognise their own success
Active school
At Moss Hall we…
- ensure that all pupils receive a minimum of 2 hours of physical activity within the curriculum per week
- inspire and equip all children with the knowledge and skills to see the benefits of exercise and to lead a healthy and active lifestyle
- provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities for pupils, both before, during and after the school day
- promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles across the whole curriculum, ensuring all lessons are as active as possible
Assessment
At Moss Hall we…
- provide formative assessment within lessons so that children receive continuous verbal feedback
- provide opportunities for children to assess their own achievements and evaluate their progress during the lesson
- use questioning effectively to prompt reflection and encourage discussion between pupils
- use assessment and individual lesson outcomes to inform planning and make appropriate alterations to lessons to allow each child to progress
- use assessment for learning during a lesson, which allows teachers to differentiate tasks accordingly and utilise resources/equipment to support children’s progress
